Headaches & Migraines
Headaches and migraines are common. In fact, nine out of ten adults in the United States suffer from headaches and more than 37 million Americans experience migraines. If you suffer from headaches or migraines, our Atlanta chiropractor can help.
There are several types of headaches, including tension headaches, sinus headaches, and headaches from a misaligned spine and more. Tension headaches start when the muscles in the scalp or at the base of the skull become tense, often as the result of stress, anxiety, fatigue or emotional strain. Misaligned vertebrae can cause pain in the neck that turns into a headache; misalignment worsen muscle tension to cause pain in the forehead, temples, or back of your head and neck.
Even the weather can cause headaches and migraines. The bright sunlight, heat, humidity and storms common in Atlanta can trigger changes in serotonin that can prompt migraine headaches.
At first glance, headaches and migraines might seem the same but migraines are a special type of headache. The pain of migraines occurs when stress, pressure or other factors stimulate the trigeminal nerve, which is a large, complex nerve responsible for sensation in the face and for certain motor functions, such as biting and chewing. Stimulation of the trigeminal nerve causes irritation and swelling in blood vessels at the surface of the brain, which causes you to feel pain around your eyes, face, temples, sinuses, jaw, neck or even in your heck. A poorly aligned spine contributes greatly to the onset of migraines, especially when poor alignment affects bones in the neck and upper back.
Stress is a main factor in the development of headaches and migraines. Stress causes muscle tension, especially in the muscles at the base of the skull. Muscles contain a vast network of blood vessels; muscle tension prevents the blood in these vessels from flowing freely, resulting in poor circulation that prevents nutrient-rich blood from reaching muscles and organs. Tension in the neck muscles prevents blood from flowing freely to the head, causing symptoms of headache and migraine. Chiropractic care melts away muscle tension to restore proper circulation to the brain and the rest of the body.
Studies show that chiro care relieves migraine headaches by as much as 90 percent. Nearly half of the participants said that this type of care significantly reduced the severity of migraines.
Century Center Chiropractic can help reduce the severity, duration, and frequency of headaches and migraines without the risk of drugs or invasive procedures.
